In 2003, the state of Georgia launched “100 Days of Summer H.E.A.T.”, a public awareness campaign. H.E.A.T. stands for Highway Enforcement of
Aggressive Traffic and is meant to crack down on those who commit traffic violations while on the road. Now, the Governor’s Office of Highway
Safety is reporting that the program has led to reduced crash numbers throughout the entire state.
H.E.A.T. involves hundreds of law enforcement agencies in the state that are committed to stopping speeders and drivers who are reckless during
the summer time, which happens to be the busiens driving time of the year due to families traveling.
With H.E.A.T. in effect, the number of traffic related fatalities was 1,287 in 2009. In 2008, the number was 1,508, which means that there has been
a 14% decrease.
“The number of deaths is still unacceptable,” Governor’s Office of Highway Safety Director Bob Dallas said. Still, he feels that
people throughout the state should congratulate themselves for a job well-done.
