Man Had Tax Return Withheld Despite Being Too Young to be the Dad
A young Florida man has been through a frustrating ordeal after the state of Florida withheld his tax return for failing to pay
child support.
While withholding tax returns is a common practice in many states when a parent fails to make their child support payments, the problem in this case is that 22-year-old Rusty Cole is too young to have fathered the child in the first place. The child in question was born in 1995, which means Cole, who was born in 1987, would have been 7 years old at the time the child was born, possibly even six years old when the child was conceived.
Cole spent weeks trying to convince the state that it made an error, but he was unsuccessful. Finally, Cole got a response after emailing Florida Governor Charlie Crist. Crist must have taken an interest in Cole’s case because shortly thereafter Cole got a call from the department of revenue apologizing for the mix-up and told him his tax return would be in the mail soon.
