Mother Arrested for DUI while Driving Son to School

This week Wednesday, police in Georgia reported that a mother by the name of Barbara Thornton was arrested for driving under the influence (DUI).  Officers say that while the mother was driving her son to school, she was fading in and out of consciousness.

According to Quitman County Sheriff's Deputy Jamie Ming, "She said she had taken her son to summer school and she was just trying to get back home. She was definitely in no shape at all to be driving."

Witnesses at the Big Cat gas station, which is less than a mile from the school, say that Thornton almost hit a car as she was pulling in the parking lot.  They say that she nearly crashed into a pole before passing out in her vehicle.  They tried to rouse her, but she was incoherent.

After police arrived at the scene, they saw that Thornton was unable to perform field sobriety tests.  Thornton told police that she had just taken medicine.  They arrested her for DUI.

This was not the first time Thornton was in trouble with law enforcement.  In March, she was charged for possessing cocaine.
